“Maido” translates literally as “every time”. In actual usage, “maido” is probably best translated as “hello” but is often used as a part of expressions of thanks (ookini). Sales reps, business men, and merchants will all start off with a “maido” when visiting customers. Even on the phone, “Maido maido” often substitute “moshi moshi”. Mainly used by men, if you head out to the shopping arcades of Osaka you’ll ear female clerks at the produce shops, fishmongers, and butchers shouting out “Maido!” to their regular customers.
